Jesus was a legend in his own lifetime. "Who is he?" people asked. It's a question that is still asked and answered: people say he was a revolutionary, a magician, the Son of God, a guru, the founder of a world religion, the best person who ever was.
Many thousands of books have been written about Jesus, but the four most important are the four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Each of them tells the Gospel ("good news") of the coming of Jesus into the world. If you want to know about the parables or miracles of Jesus, or about his birth, death and resurrection, there's no better place to start than these four small books.
Matthew's Gospel: Matthew focuses especially on the teachings of Jesus and includes some of his most famous quotes. Mark's Gospel: If you're looking for a very short and action-packed account of the life of Jesus, Mark is for you. Luke's Gospel: Luke gives comprehensive account of Jesus' life, focusing on how Jesus helped the outcast people of his time. John's Gospel: John explores the deep meaning of Jesus' life, including questions of why he lived and died in the way he did. (you can download The Gospels below) From the CofE website: Christian life is lived in relationship with God through Jesus Christ, and in common with other Christians in the church seeking to deepen that relationship and to follow the way that Jesus taught. For Christians God is understood and known as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. …Father… God is love, caring for creation and for every human being as God's beloved child. …Son… God is as he has revealed himself to be in the historical person of Jesus Christ. Jesus' life, death and resurrection holds the key to knowing and loving God, and to making sense of life, before and after death. …and Holy Spirit… God is alive, loving and active today, inspiring faith, justice and truth, sustaining the life of the world, giving spiritual gifts to the church and bearing his spiritual fruit in the world - changed lives and a transformed society.
